After serval times trying to commit suicide, death, which is a taboo in Chinese culture, is not anymore in my life context. My willingness towards death always ended up not fulfilled is because there are many preparation yet not finished before I die, such as posthumous photo, which is one of the most important steps for a funeral in Chinese culture, so that people can mourn with the portrait. While randomly talking with my mother and get to know all grandparents have already prepared most details of their future funeral but posthumous photos, making creative, anti-conventional, and self-satisfying posthumous photos to figure out the real meaning of funeral portraits has become my continuous life project.
This project indicates to clarify the contents of new posthumous photos, whether they can against the traditional rules to be colored, to be more than portraits, to be decorated…If contents have changed in a new way, whether the meaning of posthumous photos also change. Or, what meanings I want to convey to people with my new posthumous photos in my future funeral.
By realizing both death and dreams contain the same process of forgetting, that people forget faces faster than forgetting stories and emotional connections. Appearance and disappearance then become the key points of this project’s contents. Trying out different materials and photographic textures is to revert the blurry feelings of death and dreams, while using digital over-exposure edition and other physical techniques such as sticking red lines are experimental process to display process of forgetting and connecting.
